Job Description

We warmly invite applications for fully funded Postdoc and PhD positions focused on developing next-generation computing elements, including microcontroller units (MCUs) and artificial intelligence (AI) processors. The primary redearch objectives are to develop nanoscale device architectures and platforms (sub-100 mm) in both 2D and 3D configurations, and perform advanced electrical characterization of oxide- and nitride-based resistive switching devices to investigate and understand the underlying physics and switching mechanisms. We are particularly interested in exploring the fundamental pyhsics of the exciting devices and uncovering the mechanisms that govern their operation. Researchers will have full access to state-of-the-art device fabrication and characterization facilities including a 100 kV electron-beam lithography (EBL) system, a multi-photon lithography (MPL) tool, an in-situ ion-beam etching/deposition tool, reactive ion-beam etching systems, maskless aligners and an electron-beam evaporator. In addition, high-end electronic instrumentation and a dedicated laboratory for precise electrical characterization and data analysis will be available to support experimental investigations. We are seeking highly motivated, independent, and proactive researchers with a strong team spirit who are eager to pursue ambitious, high-risk, high-reward research goals and contribute to the development of the next generation computing technologies.

The candidate will work on developing novel materials, devices, and algorithms of oxide/ntride-based resistive switching devices for MCU/AI applications with a team of ~ 10 researchers:

  • Unterstanding the underlying physics and operating mechanisms of device functionalities
  • Fabricating and investigating novel device concepts for various applications
  • Developing circuits and electrical characterization tools
  • Developing and characterizing next-generation microcontroller (MCU) and AI devices
  • Solving device- and system-level problems within defined timeframes
  • Presenting weekly results and progress updates to team members

Required Profile

We are seeking highly motivated and skilled candidates with:

  • For PhD: MSc degree in physics, nanoscience, electrical engineering, computer science, or related fields, including final thesis project
  • For Postdoc: PhD degree in in physics, nanoscience, electrical engineering, computer science, or related fields with proven track records
  • Demonstrated track record of excellence in research and coursework
  • Experience in one (or more) of the followings: Device fabrication, Nano-lithography; EBL; ion-beam etching; reactive ion-beam etching; multi-photon lithography; atomic layer etching; laser writer, and layout design, Electrical charakterization; programming (Python, LabVIEW, COSMOL; circuit development and layout; electrical transport instrumentation, resistive switching memory; and neuromorphic computing
  • Team spirit, strong English communication skills, and openness are essential for this position

Offer

This position provides the opportunity to work in a dynamic research enviremont equipped with state-of-the-art deposition, characterization, nano-fabrication and electrical measurement facilities. The project offers significant scope for high-impact research at the forefront of next generation MCU/AI applications, including:

  • Cutting-edge infrastructure: Access to state-of-the-art facilities for materisl growth, device fabrication, and comprehensive assessment
  • Collaborative research culture: An open and engaging working environment focused on tackling impactful challenges in the field, with the freedom to contribute your own ideas toward solving high-impact problems
  • Competitive remuneration: Salary in accordance with 65% (PhD), 100% (Postdoc) of pay group EG13 TVöD-Bund

All necessary training will be carried out after admission. The starting date ist 'as soon as possible'
